JW3: Heraclean Angst with David McAlmont and Mista Pierre

Two giants; one beloved of art and cinema; the other a giant of twentieth century jazz. Together? Absolutely!

Heraclean Angst is an entertainment that splices the mythical hero – Heracles - to the legendary music of Duke Ellington in an irreverent, hilarious, improbable performance presentation.

David McAlmont is an occasional recording artist, art historian, Studio and Diploma Unit master at the Architectural Association. Mista Pierre is a major London DJ, producer, sound designer and boffin. Together the duo created a daring, inventive lecture experience that masquerades as an eyewitness mockumentary; a surprising intellectual, musical extravaganza that is not easily forgotten.

So this Chanukah, come and be entertained, informed and surprised by this beautiful troubled figure of Greek mythology & culture.

JW3: Songs in the Key of Hanukkah with Erran Baron Cohen

For this special concert, multi-instrumentalist Erran Barron Cohen has gathered together a great band to perform a live version of his seminal album, especially for JW3.

In 2008, Erran Baron Cohen, best known as an award-winning Oscar-shortlisted film composer, recorded Songs in the Key of Hanukkah - the funkiest, coolest Jewish Holiday album to great critical acclaim.

The original album features guest appearances from Jules Brookes, Israeli megastar Idan Raichel, World music diva Yasmin Levy, New York based rapper Y-Love, Dana Kerstein and others.

The concept was to meld remixed versions of Chanukah songs with original tracks to create a new concept in Jewish holiday music, something that everybody would enjoy listening to; kids, adults and everything in between. Recorded in London, Berlin and Tel Aviv, the songs combine klezmer, reggae, electronica, hip hop, tango, pop and other genres, all fluently woven into something uniquely Baron Cohen’s.

So join us on the first night of Chanukah for this raucous, joyous celebration.

JW3: Songs for Babyn Yar

Songs for Babyn Yar reveals the forgotten stories and silenced songs from one of the most devastating periods in Ukraine’s past and asks how we can move forward.

September, 1941. Nazi occupying forces murder more than 33,000 Jews in the ravine of Babyn Yar in the surburbs of Kyiv, Ukraine, over just two days. In the following two years of Nazi occupation, Babyn Yar becomes the site of over 100,000 deaths.

November, 2021. 80 years later, three Ukrainian musicians journey deep into their shared history, drawing on survivors' testimonies, traditional Yiddish and Ukrainian folk songs, poetry and storytelling. Featuring musicians Yuriy Gurzhy, Svetlana Kundish and Mariana Sadovska, this music theatre performance devised by Dash Arts explores the complex history and legacy of a tragedy that has never been fully commemorated.

Directed by Josephine Burton

Dramaturgy by Yael Shavit and Josephine Burton

Music composed and arranged by Yuriy GurzhySvetlana Kundish and Mariana Sadovska

A Dash Arts production. In partnership with Ukrainian Institute (Kyiv) and Goethe-Institut Ukraine. Supported by Maria Björnson Memorial Fund, Shoresh Charitable Trust and Goethe-Institut London. Co-promoted with Ukrainian Institute London. Part of EFG London Jazz Festival.

JW3: Girls In Trouble with Alicia Jo Rabins

Girls in Trouble is an indie-folk/art-pop song cycle by internationally acclaimed musician, poet and Torah teacher, Alicia Jo Rabins.

Be transported by Alicia Jo Rabins' beautiful song cycle about the inner lives of Biblical women - and how their complicated experiences resonate with our own. Drawing inspiration from rabbinic midrash, bluegrass, feminist Torah commentary, indie rock and mysticism, Rabins' classical violin training and background as a poet combine with her years of Jewish text study to offer an intimate window into the surprisingly relevant lives of these ancient women. With her "gorgeous" (New York Times) voice, violin, looping pedal, and guitar, Rabins single-handedly conjures the stories of Miriam, Judith, Lilith, Tamar, and others, invoking their power to keep us company in moments of joy and difficulty.

The concert is a rare London appearance of this Portland-based internationally acclaimed performer.

JW3: Iran, Israel and the US in 2022

Jonathan Paris asks the essential questions about ongoing events in the region.

Will the Biden Administration deter Iran despite aversion of Democrats to threatening the use of force?
Will US diplomacy with Iran bear fruit in calming the region and putting Iran's nuclear aspirations in a box?
Will Israel retain autonomous decision making (from the US) in acting against Iran?
Will US Centcom strengthen regional allies by integrating Israel and moderate Arab states on an operational level?
Will the hard-line Ebrahim Raisi Presidency isolate Iran further from the international community?
Will the US become less involved whilst China becomes more involved in the region, and how will these trends affect Israel?

Join Jonathan Paris as he answers these questions.

Jonathan Paris is a London-based Middle East analyst and former Middle East Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He is currently a Senior Advisor at the Washington based Chertoff Group and a board member of the London-based Global Diplomatic Forum. He appears as a commentator on Sky, BBC, France 24 and Al Arabiya.

JW3: Anatoly Kaplan: Memorial for a Lost World

Best remembered for his illustrations of Sholem Aleichem's novels and short stories, the extraordinary work of Soviet graphic artist Anatoly Kaplan memorialises the poor but culturally rich and beloved landscape of the Eastern European Jewish shtetl.

Working with Hebrew script and folk art motifs, Kaplan’s paintings are imbued with trace memories of a once vibrant community, a distant echo of a world lost to us forever.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, including Chagall, Zadkine, and Lipschitz, Anatoly Kaplan spent the entirety of his life and career in the land of his birth, choosing to remain even when the post-revolutionary era euphoria of Jewish rights and freedoms failed to survive the brutal reality of Soviet everyday life. Despite the Soviet suppression of Jewish culture, Anatoly Kaplan created a zone of artistic freedom and truth unthinkable for others working in the 1950’s to 1970’s, continuing to work with Jewish themes and imagery and attaining status as one of the few people in the Soviet Union permitted to be both a “Jewish” and “Soviet" artist.

Supported by Genesis Philanthropy Group.
